Foundation Grant Helps Complete Winter Barn at The Surge Sanctuary
The Surge Sanctuary has been awarded a grant from the Anthony V. Martin Foundation to help complete the final phase of a new winter barn, creating a safer and more comfortable environment for the rescued animals in their care.
Founded in 2020 and run entirely by volunteers, The Surge Sanctuary provides lifelong care for around 150 rescued farmed animals, including cows, pigs, sheep, goats, chickens, and turkeys. Led by founder Abi Crumpton, the sanctuary treats every animal as an individual, ensuring they receive the care, respect, and dignity they deserve.
Alongside caring for its residents, the sanctuary also runs public education events and sanctuary tours, helping people connect with farmed animals and see them as individuals with their own personalities, needs, and stories.
This grant will support the final stage of the winter barn project, funding the electrical connection, internal lighting, power, and essential fittings needed to make the space fully functional. After three years of fundraising, planning, and determination, the completion of the barn will provide a vital resource for both the animals and the volunteers who care for them.
Speaking about the grant, Abi Crumpton from The Surge Sanctuary said:

This generous support will allow us to complete the final phase of our winter barn, including the electrical connection, internal lighting, power, and essential fittings needed to make the space safe, practical, and fully usable for our rescued animals.
After three years of fundraising, planning, and determination, we can finally say we are close to turning the lights on in the barn.
For Surge Sanctuary, this means no more relying on head torches through the long winter months. It means safer daily care for our volunteers and a more secure, comfortable environment for the cows, pigs, sheep, and other residents who rely on us for protection and shelter when the weather is at its harshest.
The completed barn will also provide a much-needed space for sanctuary tours, education, and fundraising events during the warmer months — helping more people meet farmed animals as individuals and understand why sanctuaries are so important.
