Celebrating World Earth Day 🌎 in Style, AVM Expands Protection Beneath the Waves
We are thrilled to announce that we are partnering with Seagrass Blue to protect one of the ocean's most vital nurseries.
This World Earth Day, the Anthony V. Martin (AVM) Charitable Foundation is embarking on a bold new chapter. While our hearts and history have always been rooted in protecting animals on land, we recognise that the health of our planet—and the survival of the species we love—depends on the health of our oceans.
Why Seagrass? 🌱
Seagrass meadows are among the most biodiverse ecosystems on Earth, yet they are disappearing at an alarming rate. By restoring these habitats, we aren't just planting greenery; we are rebuilding homes for marine life.
A Global Life Support System: One-fifth of the world’s largest fisheries rely on seagrass as a nursery habitat.
Massive Biodiversity: A single acre of seagrass can support up to 40,000 fish and 50 million small invertebrates.
A Sanctuary for Thousands: Over 1,000 animal species and 400 plant species find refuge in Mediterranean Posidonia meadows.
Protecting the Giants: These meadows support 121 megafauna species of conservation concern, including turtles, seahorses, and sharks.
A Carbon Super-Sinker: Seagrass absorbs carbon 30x faster than tropical rainforests per hectare, making it one of the most efficient nature-based solutions for climate impact on Earth.
Priority Conservation: These meadows are so vital they are designated as a "priority habitat" under the EU Habitats Directive.
We’re Planting One Hectare To Help Reverse The Loss Of ‘The Ocean’s Lungs’ Across Europe 🇪🇺
Since 1879, a staggering 29% of known seagrass areas in the Mediterranean have disappeared. This rapid decline is driven by several human-induced factors, most notably coastal development and construction runoff, which clouds the water and smothers these vital plants. Additionally, pollution from agriculture and wastewater, physical damage from boat anchoring and trawling, and the overarching threat of rising sea temperatures continue to devastate these underwater sanctuaries.
AVM is officially funding the restoration of one hectare of seagrass across two Mediterranean sites.
To put that in perspective, this is roughly the size of 40 double tennis courts. This single hectare is projected to offset approximately 100 metric tonnes of CO₂ over the next 15 years—enough to effectively backdate 25 years of AVM’s operational carbon footprint and cover the next 25 years.
To put that number into perspective, here is what that looks like in the real world:
115 round-trip flights: It's the equivalent of flying from New York to London and back 115 times (economy class).
The lifetime emissions of about 18 to 22 passenger vehicles.
20 Million Emails (approx. 4g of CO2 each)
It offsets the energy used for roughly 15 million Google searches!
Innovation Meets Conservation 🏗️
We chose to partner with Seagrass Blue because of their revolutionary "offshore" approach. Traditional restoration often fails because it happens in vulnerable coastal zones. Seagrass Blue uses floating "marine pods" that act as protected seed trays further out at sea, giving young meadows the best possible start.
As part of this partnership, we are deploying co-branded AVM submarines, affectionately known as "marine bees". These high-tech drones will tend to our meadows and provide us with a 24/7 live marine feed.
See the Impact for Yourself 🌎💚
Transparency is at the heart of this project. Soon, you’ll be able to visit our website to watch a live stream of the marine life thriving in our sponsored meadow thanks to CatchCam Technologies.
By bridging the gap between land-based animal welfare and sea life protection, we hoping to ensure a safer, healthier world for all creatures.
Happy World Earth Day from all of us at AVM.
